Legacy lives on - Sycamore Gap sapling to be planted in Lake District National Park

Saplings from the felled Sycamore Gap tree are being planted in public areas of all 15 UK National Parks to preserve its legacy, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, the National Trust launched a scheme to plant saplings from the iconic Sycamore Gap tree across all 15 UK National Parks, restoring the legacy of the tree that stood for more than 150 years.
  • The original tree, which stood beside Hadrian's Wall for more than 150 years, was illegally felled in 2023 in an act of vandalism that sparked national outrage; last year, Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers were sentenced to more than four years in prison.
  • Plantings began Monday in Northumberland National Park, with a sapling placed Wednesday at Yr Ysgwrn in Eryri. On Thursday, March 26, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park planted its 'Tree of Hope' at Benmore Botanic Garden following roughly 300 tree losses during Storm Eowyn.
  • Gordon Watson, Chief Executive of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority, said: "The planting of the Sycamore Gap saplings across our fifteen National Parks represents an inspiring symbol of hope." Nature can recover from destructive actions when properly cared for.
  • These plantings coincide with the 75th anniversary of Eryri National Park and other parks. ENPA vice chair Ifor Glyn Lloyd said: "While the original tree cannot be replaced, these plantings will ensure its legacy continues for generations to come.
