British man jailed for encouraging American to take his own life on video call
Phelan was also given a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order after a court found he helped pressure a vulnerable American man to die by suicide.
Dylan Phelan, 21, from Leeds was sentenced to six years and four months in prison for encouraging the suicide of Travis Dyer, 21, in Louisiana on October 30, 2024.
Phelan and two associates known as Mads and Rob operated a private Discord server called Recovery4all, which they turned into a "hunting ground" to pressure the vulnerable man.
Judge Barry Cotter KC stated Phelan acted out of "morbid curiosity," while investigators from Leeds CID and Homeland Security secured digital evidence of the two-minute fatal video call.
The court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order alongside the custodial sentence, as the judge urged anyone with information about the other participants to contact authorities.
Authorities emphasized dangers posed by online communities, urging those struggling to seek professional support through the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the USA or 116 123 in the UK.
