Lebanese president: Iran using Lebanon as ‘bargaining chip’ in negotiations with US
Aoun said Lebanon is paying the price as Hezbollah rejects a U.S.-brokered ceasefire framework and Israeli strikes have killed more than 3,500 people.
- On Friday, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Iran of using Lebanon as a "bargaining chip" in negotiations with the United States, delivering his toughest criticism of Tehran and its ally Hezbollah amid the war with Israel.
- Hezbollah rejected a Washington-mediated ceasefire plan on Thursday that required the group to cease fire and withdraw from territory where Israeli troops have occupied positions following hostilities that began more than three months ago.
- In a CNN interview, Aoun said Lebanese citizens are "paying the price" for Iranian interests and are "fed up" with the conflict, which has displaced 1.2 million people since Israeli attacks began in March.
- Addressing Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem, who claimed on Thursday that "broad segments of the Lebanese people" rejected the Washington agreement, Aoun retorted: "The Lebanese people are not your people."
- Aoun, a Maronite Christian elected head of state last year, has consistently pressed for the peaceful disarmament of Hezbollah, seeking to counter the group's influence within Lebanon's sectarian power-sharing system.
