Lebanese on the edge of Israel's occupation live with fear and rising tensions
Israel has expanded its control up to 12 kilometers deep and published a list of 53 mostly Shiite towns where residents cannot return.
On Thursday, Israel expanded its security zone in southern Lebanon up to 7 miles deep, adding eight predominantly Shiite villages to a list of 53 where residents are barred from returning.
Officials believe Iran-backed Shiite Hezbollah militants are entrenched in residential areas, prompting the military to push out the predominantly Shiite population and demolish towns.
Residents in neighboring Christian, Sunni, and Druze areas turn away displaced Shiites, fearing Israeli eviction; Qlayaa Mayor Hanna Daher reported bombing incidents after residents hosted displaced friends.
Casualties have mounted among civilians, including a priest killed by shelling in Qlayaa, while Dibbine resident Milia El-Cheikh remains unable to return to her home.
Israeli forces maintain they will remain in southern Lebanon for self-defense, even as an interim peace deal between the United States and Iran appears to be holding.
