Lebanese Fear US Has Given Green Light for Israeli Escalation

  • On Sunday, Israel's military said it struck Hezbollah targets across several areas in Lebanon including the Bekaa Valley and the village of Sohmor, part of near-daily ceasefire violations with around 25 attacks in south Lebanon.
  • The United States and Israel have pushed Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah, intensifying tensions as Israel argues Hezbollah still holds military infrastructure south of the Litani River while UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army see no evidence and begin weapons control efforts.
  • Attack methods reported include air strikes, drone strikes, ground incursions and expanded military positions; Al Manar TV said two residential buildings in Sohmor were targeted, killing more than 300 Lebanese people and displacing tens of thousands since the ceasefire.
  • Lebanon's foreign minister Youssef Rajji triggered a backlash after suggesting Israel retains the right to attack, with Hezbollah MP Ali Ammar saying '...we see him justifying Zionist criminality and the killing of his own people'.
  • Fears of a wider escalation recall 2024, when an offensive killed more than 4,000 people, as Israel retains troops in five areas inside Lebanon and analysts warn disarmament efforts could trigger chaos.
