Leaks Suggest the Steam Frame Could Be Even More Expensive Than the Steam Machine
Valve is finalizing Lepton, FEX and Proton to let the Arm-based headset run Android, x86 and Windows games from day one.
- Valve recently updated Steam pages for Lepton and FEX, two tools designed to improve compatibility between the PC gaming platform and Arm-based devices. These software components are expected to turn the upcoming Steam Frame into a "real" gaming headset.
- Lepton leverages the container-based Waydroid system to run Android apps on Linux, while FEX translates x86-64 code to Arm. Both tools reduce emulation overhead and offer "broad" compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit applications.
- Complementing Proton, the ecosystem allows the headset to run Windows-based software on the Arm architecture. With Valve's involvement, the emulator could gain traction similar to Proton's role in Linux gaming.
- Now that two major software stack pieces are showing their "faces" in public, the actual launch date should be approaching. If Valve follows the Steam Controller timeline, the Steam Frame's page could open as early as August 10.
- Earlier this year, Valve delayed the release due to memory shortages caused by AI data center overprovisioning. According to a stream by Tyler Mcvicker and NotebookCheck, the Steam Frame could eventually launch at a price at or above $1,100.
