Lawyer accused in Ryan Wedding case to stay out on bail after court dismisses review
The court admitted new evidence but found no legal error in the original release decision, leaving Paradkar on bail with house arrest and GPS monitoring.
The Ontario Court rejected the Crown's bid to overturn bail for Deepak Paradkar, a Toronto-area lawyer accused of conspiring with Ryan Wedding to commit murder of a federal witness.
Prosecutors allege Paradkar, who once promoted himself as Canada's "cocaine lawyer," advised Wedding on the killing of a federal witness and introduced him to drug traffickers operating across North America.
While Crown lawyers argued the original bail was based on evidence where the judge "speculated and drew inferences," the court found no errors in Superior Court Justice Peter Bawden's approach.
Paradkar will remain under house arrest with GPS monitoring and a $5 million pledge from his wife, as the court admitted new evidence from American authorities.
The lawyer continues fighting extradition to the United States, where he faces charges of drug trafficking and conspiracy to tamper with a witness.
