Lawsuit accuses agriculture secretary of 'religious coercion' in staff emails
The union says Rollins’ messages create religious coercion for more than 19,000 USDA staffers and violate the First Amendment and federal rules.
- On Wednesday, the National Federation of Federal Employees sued Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, alleging her recurring Christian emails are "unconstitutionally coercive" and proselytize the entire USDA workforce in violation of the First Amendment.
- According to the lawsuit, Rollins established an "escalating pattern" of proselytizing communications, reaching a "crescendo" with an April 5 Easter email characterizing the holiday as "the greatest story ever told" and the "foundation of our faith."
- Fearing retaliation, USDA employees argue they feel compelled to read these emails for job-related updates; one employee said the messaging makes him feel "unwelcome" while others fear objecting to the department head's religious proselytizing.
- Describing an "outbreak of Christian Nationalism," NFFE President Randy Erwin stated employees across various government agencies expressed similar concerns as the union seeks to prohibit further religious communications from USDA leadership.
