Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Issues Statement After Leader Dies From Traumatic Brain Injury
The church said Bassett, a General Authority Seventy and missionary leader, died after a traumatic brain injury and left behind his wife, five children and grandchildren.
On Monday, The Church announced the death of General Authority Seventy Elder W. Mark Bassett, who passed away at 59 following a traumatic brain injury while in Utah.
Bassett served as Executive Director of the Missionary Department, overseeing worldwide missionary efforts during a period of historic growth and unprecedented levels of missionaries deciding to serve.
Born in Carmichael, California, in 1966, Bassett earned a degree from Brigham Young University and worked in the automobile auction industry before joining full-time church service with his wife Angela and five children.
Church leaders expressed condolences to the Bassett family, stating, "Our love and prayers are with his dear wife Angela, his children, and his grandchildren during this difficult time."
Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles noted Monday that the church has seen "remarkable growth in the number of missionary applications" in recent months, continuing efforts Bassett led.
