UPDATE: Pear Lake Wildfire Near Clinton Grows to Nearly 160,000 Hectares

- On Saturday morning, evacuation orders for the Village of Clinton and 373 properties in Thompson-Nicola Regional District Area E were downgraded to alerts, allowing residents to return home; however, 80 properties remain under evacuation order.
- The massive Pear Lake wildfire remains out of control at 157,448 hectares stretching across the Southern Cariboo, with more than 400 firefighters battling the blaze that forced the initial evacuation.
- Crews completed heavy equipment lines supporting a 370-hectare planned ignition along the fire's southern flank, using aerial and hand ignitions to remove fuel and bring the blaze to safer, more workable ground.
- Highway 97 through Clinton reopened to all travellers at noon on Saturday, though through traffic cannot stop along the route and side roads remain restricted to local residents.
- Returning residents should exercise caution as smouldering ground fire and smoke will remain noticeable within the perimeter over coming weeks; the BC Wildfire Service urges reporting any smoke from unburnt fuel immediately.
