Langley’s 70-year-old jui-jitsu grandmaster still teaches 7 days a week

Marcus Soares teaches 22 classes a week and says jiu-jitsu gives his youngest students confidence and direction.

At 70 years old, Brazilian jiu-jitsu grandmaster Marcus Soares is still teaching seven days a week. Once an economics student who thought he’d make his living working in a bank, Soares instead brought his martial art’s lineage to B.C. in the 1990s, and has no plans to retire. “I’m doing this for 56 years,” Soares said. His path started in his home city of Rio de Janeiro, near Copacabana Beach, where he scrapped with the other neighbourhood kids.…
