Lance Rentzel, Electrifying but Troubled NFL Receiver, Dies at 82
He was a 1969 NFL touchdown leader whose off-field legal troubles led to trades, suspensions and a divorce, officials and reports said.
Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Lance Rentzel died Sunday in Alexandria, Virginia, at age 82. The nine-season NFL veteran made headlines for both his on-field success and off-field controversies.
Drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 1965, Rentzel was traded to Dallas in 1967 after injury-hampered seasons. He gained more than 950 yards in each of his first three seasons with the Cowboys.
Over 115 games, he totaled 268 receptions and 38 touchdowns. He famously caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from halfback Dan Reeves during the 1967 NFL Championship Game, the legendary "Ice Bowl."
His time in Dallas ended in 1970 following an arrest, prompting a trade to the Los Angeles Rams. His divorce from entertainer Joey Heatherton also drew public attention during this period.
Following a 1973 suspension by Commissioner Pete Rozelle, Rentzel retired from the NFL. He later authored "When All the Laughter Died in Sorrow," detailing his mental illness and the incidents that prompted his career exits.
