Lake Erie Nears First Complete Freeze-Over Since 1996

Weeks of Arctic cold boosted Lake Erie's ice to over 95%, a rare level reached only three times since the 1970s, NOAA reported.

  • On Feb. 1, 2026, satellites showed Lake Erie nearly ice-covered, with only small pockets of open water as it flirts with a complete freeze-over.
  • During a severe Arctic blast, ice coverage surged from 2 on Jan. 14 to 85 by Jan. 21, and Brandon Buckingham explained, `From mid-January through early February, temperatures have consistently been 10-25 degrees below historical averages, aiding in a rapid expansion of ice coverage.`
  • Historically, full freeze is rare as NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory found Lake Erie reached 95.3 in late January, with complete ice only in 1978, 1979 and 1996.
  • Shoreline communities and wildlife face stress as nearly 95% ice coverage limits food access, with an emaciated Little Gull brought to the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center earlier this week.
  • The next several days may determine if Lake Erie reaches full ice coverage again, as wind and gusty conditions can reopen open water, with a warmup expected Feb. 11 to 17, Buckingham explained.
