Lake Country woman convicted of trying to use fentanyl to kill cat

The woman pleaded guilty after a veterinarian alerted the BC SPCA, and officers later seized two other cats with drugs in their systems.

  • On May 29, Jayme-Jo Crystal Brooks pleaded guilty in Kelowna court to administering a poisonous substance to her cat, which she attempted to euthanize with fentanyl on Christmas Day 2024.
  • The SPCA launched an investigation after a veterinarian contacted their helpline about a cat in critical distress, with a necropsy later revealing fentanyl exposure.
  • During the investigation, officers seized two other cats from Brooks' care, finding both had cocaine, amphetamines, and methamphetamine in their systems; one was later adopted.
  • Under the Criminal Code of Canada, Brooks received a five-year ban from owning or living with animals and 12 months of probation, including 30 hours of community service.
  • Calling the outcome a "huge victory for animal welfare in Canada," regional manager Jamie Wiltse noted that Criminal Code prosecutions send a stronger message than provincial offences.
