LAFD Chief Moore touts use of drone technology ahead of anniversary of Lachman and Palisades fires
Chief Moore admitted multiple edits softened criticism of LAFD leadership in the Palisades Fire report and confirmed 74% of recommended reforms are now implemented.
- On Tuesday at a Los Angeles Fire Commission meeting, Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Jaime Moore acknowledged multiple report drafts were edited to soften criticism before his appointment and vowed it will not recur.
- After The Times obtained seven drafts, Battalion Chief Kenneth Cook declined to endorse the public version on Oct. 8, and Ronnie Villanueva circulated a working draft to Mayor Karen Bass's office, which sought "refinements," Genethia Hudley Hayes said.
- Moore ordered changes including drone technology, thermal imaging and revised incident weather decision-making matrices, and as of Tuesday, about 74% of after-action report recommendations have been implemented.
- Following former Fire Chief Kristin Crowley's Feb. 21 firing, Moore said the Palisades Fire exposed staffing and resource placement challenges, not failures by firefighters, during the Jan. 7 fire event.
- The union says the department has 3,400 firefighters but needs about 7,000, and it is pursuing a ballot measure for funding while Chief Jaime Moore ordered an independent investigation including the Fire Safety Research Institute.
