Labor axes funding for Prince Harry-backed Invictus Australia
The charity said the lost $9 million would weaken recovery and rehabilitation programs for about 30,000 veterans, its chief executive said.
On Tuesday, Treasurer Jim Chalmers cut $9 million in funding for Invictus Australia in the federal budget, ending a commitment from the 2022-23 budget.
Supporting 30,000 veterans through sports and rehabilitation, Invictus Australia aims to aid recovery and prevent suicide following Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide recommendations.
Chief executive Michael Hartung told 2GB on Wednesday the organization was blindsided by the decision, saying it cannot "sustain the level of impact" across the veteran community.
A spokesperson for Veteran Affairs Minister Matt Keogh said funding for these grants concluded, though the Veteran and Family Wellbeing Agency will provide future opportunities for wellbeing initiatives.
Hartung urged the government to reconsider, warning the funding cut jeopardizes Australia's ability to send around 50 athletes to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.
