LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, JUL 9 – LA County aims to tackle drug smuggling and substance use in juvenile halls with new scanners and canine units, following multiple arrests and hospitalizations, officials said.
- On July 8, the LA County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 with one abstention to approve installing airport-style scanners and increasing canine units at Los Padrinos and Barry J. Nidorf juvenile halls.
- Following July 2 hospitalizations, a tutor was arrested June 30 for smuggling 170 pills, and a deputy was detained June 10 for alprazolam trafficking at juvenile halls.
- LA County officials report eight staff and one youth hospitalized after suspected drug exposure, with two experiencing seizures and one a cardiac event, according to Probation Chief Viera Rosa.
- The board's 4-0 vote approves installing airport-style scanners, expanding canine units, and updating policies at Los Padrinos and Nidorf juvenile halls to combat drug smuggling and overdoses.
- If approved, the Probation Department must submit a 60-day report detailing security upgrades and treatment plans to restore the Secure Youth Treatment Facility's compliance.
