Vladimir Putin appointed a major-general who had fought in Ukraine, Alexander Chouvaïev, for the Belgorod region, and Egor Kovalchouk at the head of the neighbouring region of Briansk.
The governors of Belgorod and Briansk, Viacheslav Gladkov and Alexander Bogomaz, have been dismissed by Putin although they have urged them to say that these are their voluntary resignations.
