The suspension of Krakow's partnership with Lviv is a possible consequence of Ukrainian councilors' decision to designate 2027 as the Year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. However, Krakow Mayor Łukasz Gibała is making the implementation of this proposal contingent on the Lviv mayor's reaction to the controversial resolution.
On Wednesday, Krakow Mayor Łukasz Gibała presented the city council with a proposal to suspend the city's partnership with the Ukrainian city of Lviv. This decision is a response to the Lviv Regional Council declaring 2027 the year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. However, Łukasz Gibała announced that he would withdraw the draft resolution if the mayor of Lviv condemned the Lviv Regional Council's actions.
Łukasz Gibała has proposed suspending the partnership between the capital of Małopolska and Lviv. Councilors are scheduled to vote on a draft resolution on the matter. "Sometimes history surprises us. I didn't expect this to be one of my first decisions," said the mayor of Krakow, who was sworn in on Tuesday.
Relations between Krakow and Lviv may be temporarily suspended. This proposal was put forward by the new mayor of Krakow, Łukasz Gibała. The reason for this is the Lviv Oblast authorities' plan to dedicate 2027 to commemorating the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and Roman Shukhevych.
