Australia's first-ever Michelin stars go to 11 restaurants in one state
The inaugural Michelin Guide South Australia recognized 77 venues, with 10 restaurants earning first stars and 16 receiving Bib Gourmand awards.
Magill Estate Restaurant made history in the inaugural Michelin Guide South Australia 2027, becoming the first Australian venue to earn two Michelin stars, as 10 South Australian restaurants earned their first stars.
Anonymous inspectors conducted covert visits across South Australia to compile the guide. While the South Australia government funded Michelin's state coverage, the selection process remained strictly independent, ensuring restaurants could not pay for distinctions.
Chef Scott Higgins' Magill Estate Restaurant became the 550th globally to feature two stars. Other stars went to Adelaide's Restaurant Botanic, Skilogalee Barrel House in Clare Valley, Maxwell Restaurant, and Alanna Sapwell's Esmay.
In total, 77 restaurants were recognized, ending a nervous wait for venues. Sixteen eateries earned a Bib Gourmand, while another 50 received a special Michelin Selected mention.
From Thursday, featured venues will display globally recognized Michelin Guide plaques. This inclusion marks the first expansion of the centuries-old benchmark into South Australia.
