Kinahan Remanded, to Be Represented by Belfast Solicitor
- On Monday, alleged crime gang leader Daniel Kinahan appeared via video link from Portlaoise Prison before the Special Criminal Court, which heard that Belfast solicitor Darragh Mackin of Phoenix Law intends to represent him.
- Kinahan faces a single charge of "directing the activities of a criminal organisation" between October 18, 2015, and April 6, 2017, following his extradition from the United Arab Emirates to Ireland.
- Senior Counsel David Perry told the court that Mackin could not attend personally due to "unexpected circumstances that arose elsewhere," appearing solely to confirm the solicitor's intent to formally "come on record."
- Ms Justice Caroline Biggs remanded Kinahan in custody for one week to facilitate the legal application, ordering his in-person attendance at the next scheduled appearance next Monday.
- Although Kinahan has appeared via video link during recent proceedings, he indicated a preference to attend future hearings in person as the case moves forward with legal representation now in place.
