'Kiki's Delivery Service' to Be Adapted as Live-Action Series
The 10-episode series is the property’s first live-action TV adaptation and will draw mainly from the novel’s first volume.
On Tuesday, BBC Studios, Wheel in Motion, and Kadokawa Corporation announced a partnership to produce the first live-action television series based on Eiko Kadono's book series.
Marking the 40th anniversary of the book series, the project follows the 1989 animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli.
Screenwriter Irena Brignull, who wrote The Boxtrolls, Skellig, and The Little Prince, will adapt the series into 10 episodes of 30 minutes each.
The narrative follows Kiki, a 13-year-old witch who relocates to the port town of Koriko with her cat, Jiji, to start her delivery service.
Grainne McNamara of BBC Studios Kids & Family said the team is thrilled to bring the story to a "global stage," while Takeo Kodera, director of international co-productions at Kadokawa, called it an "exciting tribute.
