Kid Cudi to Write, Direct, and Star in Jean-Michel Basquiat Biopic Jean
Kid Cudi says he researched the artist extensively and posted character images as he prepares a biopic that has no release date.
- On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Scott Mescudi announced he will write, direct, and star in 'Jean,' a biopic about artist Jean-Michel Basquiat scheduled for filming in 2027.
- Motivated by failed past attempts to produce a Basquiat film, Mescudi decided to write the script himself, describing the project as a "love letter to Jean, the 80s and NY city."
- Mescudi shared photos showcasing his transformation for the role, wearing a dreadlocked wig mimicking Basquiat's signature hairstyle; the artist died in 1988 at age 27.
- Mescudi's biopic joins other projects exploring the painter's legacy, including documentary 'King Pleasure' and 'Samo Lives,' an upcoming film featuring Actor Kelvin.
- Basquiat remains a significant cultural and financial figure, with his work commanding high value; his 'Untitled' painting sold for $110.5 million in 2017.
