Guardiola Quit '100 Times' Before Leaving, Says Man City Chairman
Al Mubarak said Guardiola changed English football as City prepare to announce a successor soon after winning 20 trophies in 10 years.
On Thursday, Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak confirmed the club will "very soon" announce former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca as successor to Pep Guardiola, whose 10-year tenure recently concluded.
Al Mubarak revealed Guardiola threatened to quit "100 times" over the decade, with the chairman acting as a "psychiatrist" to persuade him to stay until reaching the "real moment" to depart.
The Catalan coach's historic reign yielded 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Uefa Champions League, cementing his dominance before departure.
Describing the succession as a "thoughtful and structured process," Al Mubarak insisted the club is "convinced" they have selected the "right manager" for seamless transition.
Responding to critics, the chairman stated, "We are far from peaked," emphasizing winning is part of City's "DNA" and expressing confidence the club will return strong next year with new additions.
