SHARJAH, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, JUL 21 – Athulya Sekhar faced years of dowry harassment and abuse before her death; her husband has been charged under multiple legal provisions including the Dowry Prohibition Act, authorities said.
- On July 19, Athulya Sekhar was found dead in her Rolla-area flat in Sharjah, discovered alongside her daughter on her 30th birthday and first day at a new job.
- Amid ongoing dowry demands, she experienced years of mental and physical torture over a 2014 marriage, with family alleging repeated cash and car demands despite Rs 20 lakh dowry and a Bullet motorcycle.
- NDTV reported that Satheesh allegedly choked her, kicked her and hit her head with a plate between July 18 and July 19; her family shared a handwritten Malayalam note and video evidence of her injuries with authorities.
- Chavara Thekkumbhagam police booked Satheesh Sivasankara Pillai on murder and dowry harassment charges, and his employer fired him, Gulf News reported.
- A Special Investigation Team led by the Karunagappally superintendent will probe her death, and on Monday her sister plans to file complaints with Sharjah police and the Indian Consulate.
