Rugby League Player Banned for 6 Matches over Homophobic Slur in Australian Competition
Kepaoa pleaded guilty and apologized after being sent off, as the NRL judiciary imposed a six-match ban for the slur.
Newcastle Knights forward Asu Kepaoa received a 6-match suspension on Wednesday after pleading guilty to using a homophobic slur in a New South Wales Cup match.
The incident occurred during the Knights' reserve-grade win over St. George-Illawarra last week, when Kepaoa was sent from the field before halftime and referred directly to the New South Wales Rugby League judiciary.
Kepaoa issued a personal apology acknowledging the harm caused by his language, mirroring similar disciplinary actions including Marcelo Montoya's 4-match ban for a homophobic slur in 2022.
The Knights released a statement Wednesday confirming they will provide educational support to Kepaoa, emphasizing that harmful language has no place in the club, the National Rugby League, or the community.
This disciplinary action comes weeks after Sydney Roosters prop Kane Evans became the second male National Rugby League player to come out as gay, marking a significant moment for the league's inclusivity efforts.
