Kenya confirms new Ebola case, total at nine, health ministry says

Health officials said the eight surviving patients are improving as contact tracing reaches 134 of 135 identified contacts.

  • On Tuesday, the Ministry confirmed a 9th Ebola case, a 24-year-old relative of the first patient who tested positive while already in quarantine; all nine cases remain confined to one known cluster.
  • The outbreak began earlier this month when a traveler from the Democratic Republic of Congo died at a Nairobi hospital on October 5, with officials reporting no evidence of transmission beyond this group.
  • Contact tracing efforts have identified 135 individuals, with 134 currently quarantined, representing 99.3 per cent of contacts, while the Ministry distributed supplies to 12 very high-risk and 16 high-risk counties.
  • Health Director General Patrick Amoth reported that remaining patients are stable and responding well to treatment, with the first group of contacts scheduled to return home from October 25.
  • The US State Department recently advised Americans to reconsider travel to Kenya, while the Ministry continues urging citizens to seek medical attention for symptoms by calling the toll-free number 719.
