Derecho Recovery: Iowa DNR Maps 5 Years of Recovery Efforts

IOWA, AUG 6 – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports nearly 7 million trees were damaged or lost in the 2020 derecho, with ongoing recovery efforts planting thousands of new trees.

  • On Aug. 10, 2025, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources unveiled an interactive map titled `5 Years of Derecho Recovery`, coming four days ahead of the five year anniversary.
  • The severe storm system spanned more than 770 miles across Iowa on August 10, 2020, and sustained winds battered Central and Eastern Iowa for nearly an hour.
  • Following the derecho, officials reported damage to more than 56,800 acres of forest land and about 850,000 acres of Iowa crops, with over 100 trees at Ledges State Park and nearly 290 at Rock Creek State Park.
  • The City of Cedar Rapids has allocated $1 million annually over 10 years to restore the storm-damaged canopy, with nearly 9,000 trees planted since 2021 and 16,500 on public land, plus 7,000 for private property through Trees Forever.
  • Despite progress, the Iowa Legislature did not allocate funding this year, and DNR data shows recovery remains a long process for urban and forest canopies.
