Kelowna man faces life sentence for 2023 murder, parole eligibility to be decided
Crown prosecutors seek 16 years before parole eligibility, citing 16 blows with a wrench, prior violence and no remorse.
On Friday, Brandon Davina appeared in Kelowna Supreme Court for sentencing in the second-degree murder of Brianna Jankauskas, with a decision on parole eligibility adjourned to November.
In August 2023, Davina killed Jankauskas at his 337 Hardy Road home, striking her 16 times with an 18-inch crescent wrench while she sat on his couch.
Crown prosecutor Miho Ogi-Harris requested 16 years of parole ineligibility, citing brutal and deliberate actions, while defence lawyer Jordan Watt argued for 12 to 15 years.
Family members expressed extreme grief in court, describing Jankauskas as bubbly with an infectious laugh; the Crown cited Davina's 911 call as the sole mitigating factor.
Justice Fitzpatrick withheld sentencing on Friday, deferring the parole eligibility decision until November, with a final ruling expected before year-end.
