Kelowna Athlete and Therapist Conquers Prestigious Trail Race in France

- On the Aug. 28 weekend, Kelowna respiratory therapist Emilie Mann placed 19th at the UTMB in Chamonix, France, competing against more than 2,400 athletes and crossing the finish line after 25 hours.
- The 174-kilometre race features more than 10,000 metres of elevation gain across France, Italy, and Switzerland. Mann described the massive mountains as intimidating compared to terrain near her home in Kelowna.
- Mann battled nausea between kilometres 40 and 90 but dug deep to find mental fortitude to continue. Despite the physical setback, she successfully met her goal of placing within the top 20 competitors.
- French runner Blandine Hirondel set a new female record of 21 hours, 54 minutes and 49 seconds. Mann said she is "elated" with her performance, noting that top-20 placement at the UTMB is a major achievement.
- Mann has returned to part-time work at Kelowna General Hospital. As a professional athlete for Merrell Canada, she plans to compete in the UTMB again in the near future.
