Lady Vols Open Women's College World Series with Victory over Texas
Elsa Morrison hit a three-run homer and Sage Mardjetko held Texas scoreless through four innings as Tennessee opened the WCWS with a 6-3 win.
On Thursday, the Tennessee Lady Volunteers defeated the Texas Longhorns 6-3 at Devon Park in their Women's College World Series opener. Freshman Elsa Morrison hit a three-run home run in the second inning to spark the victory.
Pitcher Sage Mardjetko shut out Texas through four innings on one hit, controlling play early. Senior ace Karlyn Pickens relieved her in the fifth, ultimately earning her seventh save of the season.
Morrison went 2-for-3 with a sixth-inning double to right-center field, extending Tennessee's lead. Tennessee now holds 64 consecutive wins when leading by three or more runs.
Moving into the winner's bracket, Tennessee will face Texas Tech on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET on ABC after the Red Raiders defeated Mississippi State 8-0 on Thursday.
Texas faces an elimination game against Mississippi State on Friday, while the Lady Vols continue their first consecutive Women's College World Series appearance since 2012 and 2013.
