Body of 16-Year-Old Girl Found at Her Home 2 Weeks After She Went Missing, Deputies Say
Authorities say the death remains a homicide investigation after the remains of 16-year-old Shayln Harvey were identified, and her stepfather is jailed on related charges.
On Monday, the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office confirmed that human remains discovered Friday at a Big Chimney property belong to missing 16-year-old Shayln Shantel Harvey.
Harvey was reported missing by her stepfather, James Truman, on May 4; deputies searched the 355 Offutt Drive property where she lived last week following neighbor information.
Executing a search warrant Friday, deputies discovered the remains with assistance from West Virginia Search and Rescue K-9 units and cadaver dogs.
Truman was arrested May 8 on charges of "sexual abuse by parent, guardian, custodian or other person in position of trust to a child" and is held in the South Central Regional Jail on $100,000 bail.
The Medical Examiner is determining cause of death while investigators continue processing evidence; those with information should contact the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office or the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673.
