Kaepernick, Springsteen receive new ACLU award for activism in arts, business, science and sports
The new honor recognized their activism and cultural influence, as about 1,200 people attended the ACLU ceremony, officials said.
- Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and rock star Bruce Springsteen received the inaugural ACLU Ralph Ellison Award on Friday, July 24, 2026, during the American Civil Liberties Union's Biennial Leadership Conference in Washington.
- About 1,200 attendees, mostly high school students from the National Advocacy Institute, gathered at the Washington Hilton for the 2-hour event hosted by actress Laverne Cox.
- Kaepernick, who knelt in protest against racial injustice a decade ago, said: "When we look back at this moment, it will not be the speeches that change the direction of history."
- Performing "Streets of Minneapolis," Springsteen dedicated the award to citizens in Minnesota and Portland who "put their beliefs and their lives on the line" this year.
- The ACLU also honored Vanita Gupta, Erwin Chemerinsky, and Elizabeth Foster for their contributions to civil rights, recognizing defenders of civil liberties across the country.
