'Just the Happiest Kid': Clinical Trial Brightens Future for B.C. Boy - Northern Sentinel
The early trial added two drugs to standard therapy, and all four B.C. children in the study had improved outcomes, doctors said.
Seven-Year-Old Beckett Tessarolo achieved remission after participating in the North America-wide TINI clinical trial, joining three other B.C. patients with improved outcomes from the study.
Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at nine months, Beckett's parents Melanie and Geoff chose the TINI trial over standard chemotherapy, saying they "leaned into the advice of the doctors."
During his eight months of hospital treatment, including an initial 57-day stay, Beckett navigated COVID pandemic-restricted visits; Dr. Rebecca Deyell, clinical instructor in UBC's Department of Pediatrics, described the regimen as "very intensive."
Now "just the happiest kid," Beckett remains in remission while his family has raised $475,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and BC Children's Hospital Foundation.
Success in the TINI trial prompted the upcoming TINI2 study, which adds a third drug to the regimen, while the new OPTIMISE trial is "designed to match children, adolescents and young adults with high-risk, hard-to-treat cancers to targeted therapies.
