Just a Few Minutes of Vigorous Activity Each Day May Lower Risk of 13 Cancers, Study Finds

Researchers found that replacing just 3 minutes of lower-intensity movement with vigorous activity was linked to a lower cancer risk.

  • A study published in BMC Medicine found that losing just two to three minutes of daily vigorous activity can increase cancer risk by 15 per cent, based on health data from nearly 60,000 people.
  • Experts analyzed data from the Biobank to examine the 24-hour daily movement spectrum, which includes sleep, sedentary behavior, and physical activity; they found that the more people moved, the lower their risk of cancer.
  • Conversely, swapping 30 minutes of movement for 30 minutes of sedentary behavior increased the risk by 8 per cent, while replacing active behavior with sleep increased the risk by 7 per cent.
  • The American Cancer Society notes that being overweight or obese is associated with 14 to 20 per cent of cancer deaths; staying active helps keep weight in control and reduces chronic inflammation.
  • Current NHS guidelines and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend adults aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week to maintain health.
