Jury Considers Verdicts in Trial of Grandparents Accused of Murder - Liverpool Echo
FLINTSHIRE, NORTH WALES, JUL 14 – Michael and Kerry Ives face murder and child cruelty charges after their grandson died from a fatal head injury, with expert evidence indicating the injury occurred minutes before collapse.
On July 14–15, 2025, a jury at Mold Crown Court found Michael and Kerry Ives guilty of murdering their two-year-old grandson Ethan Ives-Griffiths, and Shannon Ives guilty of causing or allowing serious physical harm to him.
The trial followed Ethan's fatal collapse on August 14, 2021, at his grandparents' Flintshire home, after which he died from a catastrophic brain injury two days later in hospital.
Evidence showed Ethan was severely underweight, dehydrated, and had 40 visible marks, with medical experts stating his head injury resulted from deliberate force, possibly including shaking.
Prosecutor Caroline Rees KC characterized Ethan’s ordeal as one of "casual brutality," while a medical expert testified that he suffered significant suffering and hardship in the time leading up to his death.
Mr Justice Griffiths scheduled sentencing for October 3, 2025, confirming Michael and Kerry Ives will face life imprisonment while Shannon Ives faces a substantial prison term but remains on bail until then.
