'Jumbo': the animated Indonesian film smashing records
"Jumbo," an Indonesian animated film about a large orphaned boy named Don, was released at the end of March and quickly set regional box office records.
The film's production started five years prior and engaged 400 local artists, with the goal of sharing a message about kindness and respect through Don's experiences with bullying.
"Jumbo" generated over $8 million in revenue and sold eight million tickets, setting a new record for animated films in Southeast Asia and becoming the third most successful movie in Indonesian box office history.
Director Ryan Adriandhy Halim described the movie as a reflection on the challenges and losses people face in life, emphasizing the resilience required to move past them, and expressed his hope that the film will serve as an important milestone for Indonesian animation.
"Jumbo" will open in more than 17 countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Turkey, and Mongolia in June, where its wider international appeal will be tested.
