Kalshi Ordered to Temporarily Stop Sports Wagers in Michigan
Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said Kalshi must follow geolocation rules or face a $120,000 daily fine during a 14-day restraining order.
On Monday, Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina issued a temporary restraining order blocking prediction market platform Kalshi from offering sports betting contracts to Michigan residents for 14 days.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel sued Kalshi in March, alleging it violated the Lawful Sports Betting Act by allowing 18-year-olds to place wagers, below the state's required age of 21.
Under the terms of the ruling, Kalshi must use a state-licensed geolocation provider to ensure compliance, with a $120,000 fine imposed for each day of non-compliance through July 13.
Kalshi spokesperson Diana stated the platform "is subject to exclusive federal jurisdiction" and will contest the ruling, claiming it won't be bullied by interests protecting monopolies over consumers.
This ruling follows similar legal challenges in Nevada and Massachusetts, as more than a dozen states have now taken prediction market operators to court for operating without necessary state licenses.
