Judge awards $156K in Surrey assault and battery lawsuit connected to 77-day protest
Justice Scott Morishita found the defendants jointly liable and split fault 65-35 after video showed a coordinated attack on Ning Yu Louis Huang.
- On May 15, Justice Scott Morishita of the Supreme Court awarded Louis Huang $156,570.91 in damages following an assault and battery lawsuit in Surrey.
- The Nov. 25, 2020, assault occurred in a Surrey cul-de-sac when Shiliang Yin and Bai confronted Huang, who had arrived to help journalist Bingchen Gao lodge a complaint about protesters.
- Morishita found both defendants jointly liable, dividing liability at 65 per cent for Yin and 35 per cent for Bai, and noted Huang made no "non-defensive physical contact" with either defendant.
- Video footage showed Yin delivering a "sucker punch" and four kicks to Huang's face, while Bai also struck the plaintiff in what Morishita described as a "common enterprise."
- The assault occurred during a 77-day siege of a Guildford street by members of the New Federal State, who had targeted journalist Bingchen Gao, accusing him of being a Chinese spy.
