JPMorgan Chase to Invest $750 Billion in Increasing the U.S. Housing Supply and Homeownership
The bank will support 1 million affordable units and 500,000 homebuyers while expanding mortgage lending and local housing reforms.
- On Monday, JPMorgan Chase announced the American Dream Initiative, committing nearly $200 million for a 342-unit apartment project on the Dogpatch waterfront in San Francisco.
- The Power Station project by Fifth Space aims to transform a former power plant into a community of 2,600 homes and 1.6 million square feet of commercial space, supported by this financing.
- Separately, the bank is staking up to $15 million in the Essential Housing Fund, which CEO Enrique Landa said "institutionalizes" their reputation for funding middle-income housing.
- Beyond development financing, the bank is directing $6 million in grants to local organizations, including SPUR and the San Francisco Housing Accelerator Fund, tying its fortunes to the city's downtown recovery.
- Michelle Herrick, head of commercial real estate for the institution, said an affordable housing market is "essential to driving economic growth" as the bank aims to finance 1 million affordable units nationwide through 2035.
