Russia jails journalist for 12 years on treason charge

Shipacheva pleaded guilty and received the minimum 12-year sentence after a closed-door trial that prosecutors linked to an alleged transfer to Ukraine.

  • On Wednesday, a Moscow court convicted journalist Daria Shipacheva of treason and sentenced her to 12 years in a penal colony, Interfax reported. The trial was held behind closed doors with no official details released.
  • Shipacheva was arrested in April 2025 and transferred to Rostov-on-Don, with charges reportedly stemming from an alleged money transfer to Ukraine. Before her arrest, T-Invariant reported she faced harassment from the banned group "Male State" over her feminist views.
  • Her trial lasted just 90 minutes and Shipacheva pleaded guilty, receiving the minimum sentence for the offense. Russian courts convicted a record 312 people on treason and espionage charges in the first half of 2026, according to Vyorstka.
  • In a video published by Mediazona, Shipacheva appeared shocked as the verdict was announced. Her defense team had requested a lighter sentence citing her cooperation with law enforcement, but the court proceeded with the 12-year term.
  • Russia has increased pressure on independent media since launching its war in Ukraine in 2022. Prior to this verdict, the Committee to Protect Journalists reported 29 journalists were imprisoned in Russia in connection with their work.
