Legendary Singer-Songwriter Joni Mitchell Becomes US Citizen
The Canada-born singer-songwriter shared photos and video of the swearing-in, becoming a dual citizen after more than six decades in the United States.
On Tuesday, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell officially became a United States citizen, sharing the news via Instagram with the caption, "A journey that began 62 years ago."
Born in Alberta, Canada, Mitchell has resided in the U.S. for over six decades. She previously called herself "one of those lousy immigrants" during a 2024 Hollywood Bowl performance, expressing frustration over her inability to vote.
The New York Times previously excluded Mitchell from its list of greatest living American songwriters, citing her Canadian citizenship despite her California residency. The publication may now need to amend the ranking.
Mitchell provided no further details regarding her decision to pursue dual citizenship. She shared a video of the ceremony where she was introduced as "Joni Mitchell, Canada," followed by audience applause.
With 18 studio albums recorded largely in the U.S., Mitchell remains an influential figure in popular music. Her naturalization is not an explicit endorsement of the current political regime, according to reports.
Musician Joni Mitchell has spent more than 60 years of her 82 years in the USA. Now she has taken up citizenship there, even though she once said, "I am definitely Canadian. I am proud of that."
