Johor extends school closures to Oct 16 as haze worsens
All schools and educational institutions in Johor will remain closed for another five days from Monday, Oct 12, to Friday, Oct 16, due to ongoing haze affecting 1,198 schools and 617,258 students.
Johor education and information committee chairman Muhammad Naqib stated the extension follows concerns over current air pollution trends and health risks, as the state prioritizes preventive measures to reduce exposure.
Air Pollutant Index readings remain stagnant between 170 and 180, indicating air quality remains in the "Unhealthy" category, according to Naqib.
Home-Based teaching and learning will continue where appropriate to ensure "learning is not disrupted," Naqib said, while examinations will be postponed per the Johor Education Department.
Projected wind movements from Indonesia's Kalimantan between Oct 13 and Oct 15 could bring transboundary air pollution to Johor, prompting authorities to extend closures through Friday.
One of the main factors driving the extension of the school holidays is the predicted wind movement that will push the smoke into the Johor region, Malaysia.
