Malaysia closes schools in several states, territories due to haze

The ministry said affected schools must switch to home-based learning, with teachers and support staff allowed to work from home.

  • On Friday, Oct 9, the Education Ministry ordered all schools in Selangor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Rompin to close after Air Pollutant Index readings reached unhealthy levels, affecting over two million students.
  • Following royal concerns from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek lowered closure thresholds, mandating that schools close when API readings exceed 180 or remain above 150 for three consecutive days.
  • To ensure academic continuity, Education Director-General Datuk Mohd Azam Ahmad mandated that affected schools transition to home-based teaching and learning, or PdPR, while teachers and support staff are permitted to work from home during closures.
  • Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim contacted Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto regarding the regional crisis, with Prabowo Subianto agreeing to "take the necessary steps" to combat peatland fires driving the haze.
  • Addressing parent feedback about childcare disruptions, Fadhlina promised that "in the future, we will ensure that any decision to close schools is notified in advance" so families have time to prepare.
