John Tory says he will not run for Toronto mayor
On March 3, 2026, former Toronto mayor John Tory announced he will not run in this year's municipal election, saying he cannot put his family through 'inevitable attacks' on his personal life.
Having been encouraged by business and community leaders, John Tory, former Toronto mayor, announced he would not run, citing family concerns after his 2023 resignation following his relationship with a city staffer.
He emphasized that the choice was not due to a lack of energy or desire, and said his priorities would have included business investment, safety, reliable transit, and low taxes.
Brad Bradford, Toronto councillor , has confirmed he is running for mayor, while Olivia Chow, mayor of Toronto, has not said and a poll last week showed Chow leading Tory 43% to 34%.
The municipal election is set for Oct. 26, 2026, and Tory said he has no plans to endorse anyone while continuing his charitable work with Woodgreen, Scarborough Health Network, and TIFF.
