Jim Furyk Says It Will Be 'Great' if Patrick Reed Is Part of His Ryder Cup Team Again
Furyk said Reed could earn one of six captain’s picks if he finishes among the 12 best Americans, as the U.S. seeks a stronger foursomes record.
On Tuesday, U.S. captain Jim Furyk said it would be "great" if Patrick Reed qualified for the 12-man Ryder Cup team next year in Ireland, despite Reed's past criticism of Furyk's 2018 captaincy.
Reed, who defected to LIV Golf in 2022, chose not to renew his contract this year and leads the European tour points list, assuring his return to the PGA Tour next year.
Seeking to address a 26-8 deficit in foursomes during the last two Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups, Furyk changed qualifying so no one begins earning points for Adare Manor until the 2027 season.
"I'm going to ask this team to do more than any other United States team has in the past," Furyk stated, pledging improved preparation and player pairings for the matches.
European captain Luke Donald acknowledged the Americans' depth but maintains "zero complacency" regarding the competitive challenge facing his squad in Ireland next year.
