Goalkeeper Owono Speaks After De Miguel Death

Spanish National Police opened a routine investigation after the Tenerife striker died from injuries suffered in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono.

  • On Monday, Nov. 2, Tenerife striker Jesus De Miguel collided with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a La Liga 2 match. De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest and died at age 30 on Tuesday morning.
  • "These are the most difficult days of my life," Owono said in a statement. He deactivated his Instagram account Tuesday after receiving online abuse, with users commenting "murderer" on his posts.
  • FC Andorra defender Lautaro Spatz defended his teammate on Tuesday, stating Owono is "deeply affected by what has happened" and "would never intentionally hurt anyone." Spatz emphasized the incident was accidental.
  • Spain's National Police have opened a routine investigation into De Miguel's death. Santa Cruz prosecutor Jose Luis Sanchez-Jauregui told EFE it is "very unlikely" the case will result in criminal proceedings against Owono.
  • The Equatoguinean Football Federation expressed support for the 25-year-old goalkeeper, who has made 47 international appearances. Separately, Can Vidalet player Michel Owono reported receiving racist abuse from people confusing him with the Andorra player.
