JD Wetherspoon flags good start to year from hot weather
On Friday, October 2, 2026, British pub chain Wetherspoon posted an 8.6% rise in like-for-like sales at the start of its fiscal 2027 as hot weather drew more customers to its facilities.
Despite sales growth, Wetherspoon reported a 28% fall in pretax profit to £58.6 million for the year ended July 26, citing a jump in costs including higher wages and property taxes.
Expenses weighed heavily, including a £46 million increase in wage costs and a £9 million rise in business rates to £42.6 million, alongside £31 million in repair costs.
Tim Martin, chairman of the business, urged the Government to "refrain" from further tax hikes, noting that pubs pay around 40% of receipts as taxes to the Treasury.
While "exceptional weather" helped recent sales jump 8.6%, Wetherspoon issued four profit warnings this year, highlighting persistent industry challenges with government-led cost increases.
