JD Sports Expands Into Mexico with Grupo Axo Partnership
The rollout is part of JD Sports’ franchise-led expansion strategy as the retailer targets the fast-growing activewear market.
- On Sept 21st, Sports Fashion announced a franchise partnership with Grupo Axo to open more than 140 shops in Mexico. The Lancashire-based retail chain aims to tap into the country's fast-growing activewear market.
- The Mexico activewear market is driven by interest in sports and fashion among people under the age of 25, supporting the retailer's 'Brand First' strategy to target attractive consumer markets globally.
- Starting in 2027, Grupo Axo will operate the premises using the 'Bigger and better' format, building on the retailer's existing 75 franchise stores across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
- Following a profit outlook cut of about 50 million, CEO Regis Schultz is driving a turnaround amid weak consumer spending in the North American market, which accounts for over a third of sales.
- "We see a significant opportunity to lead the category in Mexico," Schultz said, noting the partnership allows Axo to leverage the brand's exclusive product portfolio across footwear and apparel.
