JBS to Close Pennsylvania Beef Plant Amid Cattle Shortage
JBS said the closures follow investments in newer facilities and a 75-year low U.S. cattle herd that is squeezing meatpackers.
- On Friday, JBS USA announced it will close its beef processing facility in Souderton, Pennsylvania, and a value-added plant in Memphis, Tennessee, citing modernization and long-term competitiveness.
- These closures reflect a 75-year low in the U.S. cattle herd, driven by drought and high feed costs that have forced ranchers to cull animals and pressured processors to cut capacity.
- The Souderton facility employs more than 1,700 workers, and Wendell Young IV, president of UFCW Local 1776, said the union is "working around the clock" to keep the plant open.
- Production from affected sites will shift to other plants, JBS USA CEO Wesley Batista Filho said, as the company expands prepared foods operations in Texas, Georgia, and Iowa.
- Citi Research analysts Renata Cabral and Luis Felipe Terzariol said capacity reductions are "the most likely mechanism for industry rebalancing," while JBS shares rose 2.9% on June 12 to the highest price in two weeks.
